How to choose between mirrorless and DSLR, and what sensor size actually means for your photos — before you compare specific models.

A real camera is a bigger, longer-term purchase than a phone upgrade, and the marketing terms (sensor size, megapixels, autofocus points) can be more confusing than helpful. Here's what to actually weigh first.

What to look for

Mirrorless vs. DSLR

Mirrorless bodies are now the industry focus — faster autofocus, lighter bodies, better video — while DSLRs remain solid, often cheaper options with longer battery life. Unless you specifically need optical viewfinder feel, mirrorless is the safer forward-looking pick.

Sensor size over megapixels

Full-frame sensors handle low light and depth of field better than crop-sensor (APS-C) bodies, but cost and weight more. Megapixel count matters far less than sensor size for most everyday photography.

Lens ecosystem

You'll likely spend more on lenses than the body over time — check that the camera's lens mount has a healthy range of lenses available (and used-market prices) before committing to a system.

Autofocus for your subject

Autofocus systems are tuned differently — eye/face tracking matters for portraits, tracking speed matters for sports/wildlife. Check autofocus reviews for your specific use case, not just the general spec count.

Video specs if you shoot video

If video matters, check for real 4K without a heavy crop factor, and whether the sensor overheats during long recording sessions — a common issue on smaller camera bodies.
